Spider-Man Premium Format Figure I sculpted for Sideshow Collectibles.
First, I am incredibly thankful to Sideshow for giving me the opportunity to help breathe life into this piece and to work with such an awesome team of professionals. Without them, none of this is possible.
With such friendly collaboration and art direction from Kellam Cunningham and David Igo, I had the distinct honor to sculpt this web slinger from the original concept design by Richard Luong and Zach Roane. Without them, this piece would not be possible. After receiving their concept, I had big shoes to fill, as there have been so many amazing renditions of Spidey done before me. I merely stood on the shoulders of giants.
With the idea finalized, I was tasked with pushing the concept further. Other than making Spider-Man more dynamic, I didn't have to change too much with his pose. I will say that anatomically, it is one of the more difficult poses I've been tasked with sculpting. But man, did I struggle with that base. I think I did about 3 or 4 iterations before we settled on something. Not too many statues require the subject to interact with the base quite like that.
Overall, this was a challenging, but incredibly fun project, and I learned a ton working on it.
This piece will always hold a special place in my heart, as this was the first superhero to get me into comics and the last statue I finished before becoming paralyzed as a complete tetraplegic.
